Compare 3 prices for Fall Detector: Emergency Alert System for Seniors

Panic button with fall detection for seniors.

How much does a fall detector that answers to your needs cost?

Integrating fall detection into a security system for the elderly is important because they are more prone to falls. With Medical Alert Systems Canada, you can receive up to 3 quotes from different alarm companies to find the fall detector that suits you at the best price.

How do fall detectors work?

  • The detector detects a fall by recognizing sudden impact or rapid movements with intelligent sensors;
  • In general, during the 30 seconds following your fall or following an event that may induce the detection of a fall (sitting down, lying down, lowering your head, or bending over, removing the device and placing it on a piece of furniture…), you have the option to press the cancel button if you do not need assistance;
  • Normally, after 30 seconds, you have the option to press the cancel button on the main unit or to talk to the operator through your device to say that you don’t need help.
  • If you don’t press the cancel button, an emergency signal is immediately sent to the monitoring center after 30 seconds;
  • You can also press the alarm button before the 30 seconds is up if you really need help;
  • Whether you have pressed the alarm button or the alarm has been triggered after 30 seconds, the center contacts you to get more information and sends emergency services.

You can wear your emergency button in three ways:

  • Around your neck as a pendant, at breastbone height and at least 1m from the ground, (accessory: adjustable cord);
  • Attached to your suit, at chest height and at least 1m from the ground (accessory: brooch);
  • On your waist, at least 80cm from the ground, attached to your belt (accessory: belt clip).

Your emergency button or medical alert button evaluates variations in height and orientation by considering horizontal position and speed of movement to differentiate between a fall and your movements in daily life.

No matter how you wear your device, be careful when you take it off or put it somewhere as it is a very sensitive device. A beeping sound means that your action has triggered an alarm: you must cancel it by pressing the button on the main unit.

Who needs a fall detector?

Automatic fall detection for enhanced senior safety.

A fall detection system can be essential, especially for people who are vulnerable and weakened by:

  • Loneliness;
  • Age:
  • Problems with balance and orientation, vision, joints…;
  • Diseases that commonly afflict seniors.

Therefore, a fall detection system is ideal in any security system for the elderly. This is also important for people who are:

Undergoing special treatment that may affect their autonomy;

Suffering from a dysfunction of the vestibular system of the inner ear, disorientation, muscle weakness… regardless of age.

Different functions of a fall detector with monitoring services

Medical Alert Systems Canada has partnered with security companies that offer fall detection systems connected to a central monitoring station. These devices offer the following benefits:

  • Ergonomic and waterproof;
  • LED Status and audible signal to indicate that an alarm has been triggered;
  • Alert button (to send an emergency signal) and cancel button (to cancel the sending of the emergency signal within 30 seconds after the fall or the event that led to the fall detection);
  • For some models: dual control (2 buttons pressed simultaneously) to avoid false alarms;
  • Delay of generally 30 seconds before the alarm is triggered, during which a beep is heard, allowing the user to get up and/or cancel the sending of an emergency signal;
  • Option to adjust the sensitivity of the device’s sensors to the user’s preference;
  • Battery-operated device that can be replaced;
  • Contact with the monitoring center, and with pre-registered numbers, wherever you are in your home.

Other related medical alert systems

A panic button is a security device that can be used in different areas and whose function is to allow the user to send an emergency signal (siren or silent alarm) in case of emergencies such as:

  • Intrusion;
  • Aggression;
  • Illness;
  • A fall;
  • Burglary;
  • Robbery;
  • Beginning of a fire;
  • For counseling (especially for an elderly person living alone)…

Apart from keeping the user safe at home, especially if the person is elderly, a panic button can be used in different places:

At work;

A bank;

A public place (hospital, airport, restaurant…);

A place in which one can be locked up by accident (ex.: cold storage…)

Depending on the circumstances, a panic button can be installed:

  • In a discreet or secret location to allow the user to send an emergency signal without the knowledge of the perpetrators;
  • In a prominent place to allow the user to quickly send an emergency signal in situations such as a fire.

As previously discussed, a panic button used for home security can be worn around the neck at sternum height, at chest height, at the waist, and even around the wrist and have the main unit   installed on a wall or placed on a piece of furniture.

For use in non-residential settings, panic buttons are mainly installed on the wall, under a desk, or even under a counter. In the case of hospitals and specialized residences, the medical alert system can be:

  • On the wall, accessible to the patient or resident: with cords to pull the wall buttons for people with reduced mobility or with physical disabilities, with loudspeaker and microphone for those who have more autonomy;
  • Integrated into the bed to facilitate the sending of alerts for bedridden people;
  • On a piece of furniture like a bedside table.

Protection after a fall for seniors.

What to do while waiting for help?

Two scenarios can happen if you have a fall but remain conscious.

  • You can get up/stand up:
  • You can’t get up.

If you are unable to get up:

  • Send the emergency signal by pressing your panic button;
  • Calmly address the operator who answers your call and describe the situation as precisely as possible;
  • Try as much as possible to cover yourself, wedge a pillow under your head, and move your feet/fingers/etc.
  • Choose the most comfortable resting position and wait until help arrives.

If you can get up by yourself:

Cancel a possible emergency signal (confirmed by a beep) by pressing the cancel button unless you feel pain or need help;
Catch your breath and check for injuries;
Lie on your side and bend your top leg;
Pull yourself up with your elbow or hands;
Reach a solid object by sliding up to it;
Support yourself on the object using both hands;
Kneel down;
Stand up slowly but surely with your strongest leg and a firm grip on the object;
Turn around and stand up carefully.

Companies that offer emergency bracelets with fall detectors

A fall or a sudden illness…

Elderly people are afraid of such things happening to them.  They could develop a fear of falling and restrict their movements which results in isolation and reduced mobility.

Fall detectors are practical for elderly people who have a fear of falling. This may result in self-imposed isolation by limiting their movements and staying in a confined space.

Fall detector systems are ideal for seniors who are afraid of falling or have a history of falls. These products offer tele-assistance for emergency support services.  This can provide the user and his caregivers with peace of mind.

A panic button can be worn as a bracelet, clip, or pendant which is used to send a signal to a monitoring station during an emergency.  The user can summon help simply by pressing the alarm button.

The central station then responds using the voice communication system in the device (no phone line needed)

If there is no answer or if there is an emergency, the contact persons listed in the contract (neighbors, family…) are informed for quick intervention.

If the contact persons cannot be reached or they are not available, the operator must contact emergency services.

Note: There are fall detectors that transmit a signal even if the alarm button is not pressed. If the individual has lost consciousness, this can be quite useful.

Data collection: At your request, the Numera LIBRIS records your (blood) pressure or pulse and sends this information to your caregivers for continuous monitoring

What are the benefits of getting a fall detector?

Do you think that a fall detector is not so important compared to your other needs?

You may not know the many advantages you can get from this device. Many elderly persons are now choosing to protect themselves with a medical alert bracelet.

A fall detector is the best way to ensure the safety and well-being of an aging relative. But the benefits of this type of device is not limited to seniors.

In Canada, fall detectors are specifically designed for:

1. Reduce the response time of emergency services in case of a fall

As soon as the fall detector recognizes an impact resembling a fall, an automated alert signal is sent to a monitoring center.

Within a few minutes, emergency services will be informed of the situation and will rush to the scene.

2. Maintaining the person’s sense of security and confidence

Seniors who have already fallen often fear the next one.

This causes them to change their habits and lose their confidence, contributing to the decline of their faculties.

3. Prolong a person’s autonomy as long as possible

For elderly people who are still independent, balance problems can compromise their ability to live alone in their own homes.

However, a fall detector can prolong independence for as long as possible! With such a fall detection device on the wrist, even an elderly person can continue to live independently for a longer time.

4. Reassure relatives of the safety of the user

The loved ones of an elderly person living alone often feel anxious about the possibility of an accident.

A fall detector monitored by a professional monitoring center can reduce anxiety because it ensures rapid intervention in case of a medical or any other type of emergency.

The list of benefits of fall detector bracelets is quite long! Know more by speaking to our partners by filling out the short online form on this page.

Is a fall detector right for YOU?

There are several panic buttons and personal emergency systems on the market including GPS bracelets, manually activated panic buttons, wall mounted buttons, etc.

Fall detectors are part of this long list, but are they for YOU?

Here are the characteristics of individuals who benefit most from the fall detection device!

  • Individuals with balance problems
  • Seniors living alone
  • People in poor health
  • Workers at risk and alone
  • Pregnant women

Do you fall into any of these categories? Take the time to compare your options with the help of the partner companies of Medical Alert Systems Canada!

ALL the features of a GOOD fall detector!

Buying a fall detector is for the protection of your health or the health of a loved one. Therefore, you must choose an emergency device with the right features.

Since not all fall detectors are created equal – here are the features to look for!

  • A manual activation button

Even the most advanced fall detector panic buttons aren’t perfect. Therefore, your emergency device may not automatically activate when you fall. That’s why your fall detector must have a manual activation button.

  • An integrated accelerometer

Inside your fall detection device, it is the accelerometer that plays the most important role in sensing impacts similar to falls. The quality and accuracy of the accelerometer will play an important role in the accuracy of your device.

  • A cellular or satellite network connection

Any panic button connected to a control panel must be able to establish a connection to the cellular or satellite network.

This is the same connection that will allow you to talk to personnel of a central monitoring station in case of an emergency, and this is a very important feature.

  • A device in the form of a bracelet or pendant

Panic buttons now come in many forms. However, when it comes to fall detectors, it’s best to choose a device in the form of a bracelet or pendant.

These models are the most effective at detecting falls as they will often hit the ground with you!

Why add GPS functionality to your fall detector?

A growing number of fall detectors are now equipped with a GPS chip! This technology makes it possible to track the user with great accuracy in case of an emergency.

But why choose a fall detector with a GPS function?

Because in case of a fall, if you were to be unconscious or unable to communicate your location to the central station, it would be difficult to get help to you. By being equipped with a GPS chip, the central station will be able to locate you in a few seconds.

Does everyone benefit from fall detectors with GPS functionality?

For many people, the GPS chip is a little too invasive. However, for people with Alzheimer’s disease, this bracelet is very useful in case of a dementia episode or confusion.

Is it necessary to get a fall detector with 24/7 monitoring?

Some fall detectors are not connected to a central monitoring center but to a simple application. Do not make the mistake of buying such a device.

Why is it ESSENTIAL for the device to be connected to a central monitoring center?

The principle behind the fall detector system is that it will quickly alert qualified personnel in the event of a fall or a health emergency. It is essential that such a device be connected to a central monitoring station that is operational at all times.

What is the role of the monitoring center connected to your fall detector?

To respond to your distress signal, to reassure you and, above all, to send help as quickly as possible!

If you should be in a vulnerable position, the central monitoring center’s dispatchers will be the first to lend you a hand. Their role in your safety and security is CRITICAL and can save your life!

Do health professionals recommend fall detectors?

Healthcare professionals recommend that individuals at risk of falling have an automated fall detection device.

But BEWARE – The Fall Detector can’t do all the work for you!

Professionals consider the fall detector as an additional protection that does not replace health care, exercise programs, and supervision of the individual at risk of falling.

A fall detector can reduce the severe consequences of falls, not to prevent them! It is, therefore, essential that you speak with your health care professional to maximize your own personal safety.

Tax credit for home support for seniors: Your chance to save!

Are you afraid of getting charged an exorbitant bill when you buy a fall detector?

Know that the Tax Credit for home support for seniors could save you a lot of money! What is the tax credit for home support for seniors?

This tax credit provides financial assistance to seniors for services needed in their homes. Services covered by this tax credit include:

  • Emergency call services activated by a device (e.g. fall detector)
  • GPS tracking services (e.g. GPS bracelet)
  • Nursing services
  • Home assistance services

What is the maximum amount you can get for your fall detector?

The tax credit for home support for seniors is 35% of the expenses incurred during the year for home support services. The maximum eligible expenses are $19,500 for a single independent person and $25,500 for a single non-independent person.

Frequently asked questions about fall detectors

Does a fall detector help prevent falls and other incidents?

Health professionals agree that a fall detector can help minimize the impact of a fall on a person’s health because of the rapid response of emergency services.

However, only an adapted training program and an optimization of the living space can really prevent falls in a person’s home.

Will your loved ones be notified if you have a fall?

If they are on your “contact” list, the answer is yes! The staff at the central office will first contact you to check your health, and then contact the emergency services to send help to you. Your contacts will then be informed.

Can a fall detector fail to send an alert after a fall?

Yes, it is possible! Accelerometers are not infallible. A fall may not send the automated alert signal, which is why it is essential to press the manual button if you fall.

What are the best brands of fall detectors on the market?

Philips LifeLine, Telus Health Companion, LifeCall, Global Security, and Secure-Vie Canada are on top of the list in the panic button industry in Canada. Each of these brands offers unique and versatile products.
