Independence for seniors with an emergency bracelet.

To describe what the Numera Libris, a medical alert bracelet from Nortek, the leading provider of personal emergency response systems in the U.S. represents, let’s take a step back to consider the impact of this device on the world of protection.

We are now in an incredible era wherein assistive technologies help to preserve the autonomy of at-risk members of our society. With a panic button, (which sends a signal to family members or a central monitoring station when something happens to the user), many people have already found safety in their homes. But what if active seniors want to go outside their homes?

Fortunately, engineers are constantly pushing the boundaries of home and personal safety. With the “Numera Libris” portable emergency button, we are looking at a world where the elderly can continue to live without fear and enjoy some level of independence.

Indeed, if you are among those suffering from the following:

  • Heart problems;
  • Obesity;
  • Diabetes;
  • Arthritis;
  • Psychological problems;

  • Balance, and other issues as a result of medical treatment or surgery;

To understand the important benefits offered by the “Numera Libris” wireless panic button, we also need to know the risks we face. Let’s take a look at the statistics related to falls among the elderly.

SENIOR FALL STATISTICS

Data regarding falls of seniors.

1/3 of adults over the age of 65 experience a fall every year in North America.

14.8 million seniors (over 65) fall every year.

20% – 30% of seniors who fall will suffer moderate to serious injuries.

Isn’t that scary? If you are caring for a person with reduced mobility or an elderly person who has difficulty getting around, there are multiple solutions ranging from a companion to an electric wheelchair.

However, a panic button is essential for most people, offering the convenience of a lightweight device that is discreet, easy to operate, and very reliable.

There are many models of emergency bracelets on the market: from a basic one linked to a console that mechanically dials a list of pre-registered numbers upon activation, to the more sophisticated system that performs multiple tasks simultaneously with additional functions.

Nortek’s Numera Libris is a multi-tasking tool that aims to bring all new technologies together to protect and assist people who need personal security.

Top features of the emergency button fall detector Numera Libris

The many benefits offered by the Numera Libris emergency bracelet.

The Numera Libris medical alert bracelet features the most sophisticated fall detection technology in the industry.

Its system consists of multiple accelerometers to separate actual from false falls (and thus avoid false alarms that can occur with simpler models).

It also includes a magnetometer that measures the direction and intensity of the magnetic field.  A gyroscope detects unusual rotation.

These sensors retrieve data based on more than 190 different parameters, including impact intensity, fall velocity, and change in orientation. When the fall detector notices unusual activity, the data is sent via the cellular network to the Numera cloud for analysis.

A systematic classifier will determine if there is actually a fall. If so, a call is made to your team. Between 30 and 45 seconds elapse between your fall and the communication with a specialized agent.  That’s how fast the response to a fall is!

Compare 3 prices for Fall Detector: Emergency Alert System for Seniors

Panic button with fall detection for seniors.

How much does a fall detector that answers to your needs cost?

Integrating fall detection into a security system for the elderly is important because they are more prone to falls. With Medical Alert Systems Canada, you can receive up to 3 quotes from different alarm companies to find the fall detector that suits you at the best price.

How do fall detectors work?

  • The detector detects a fall by recognizing sudden impact or rapid movements with intelligent sensors;
  • In general, during the 30 seconds following your fall or following an event that may induce the detection of a fall (sitting down, lying down, lowering your head, or bending over, removing the device and placing it on a piece of furniture…), you have the option to press the cancel button if you do not need assistance;
  • Normally, after 30 seconds, you have the option to press the cancel button on the main unit or to talk to the operator through your device to say that you don’t need help.
  • If you don’t press the cancel button, an emergency signal is immediately sent to the monitoring center after 30 seconds;
  • You can also press the alarm button before the 30 seconds is up if you really need help;
  • Whether you have pressed the alarm button or the alarm has been triggered after 30 seconds, the center contacts you to get more information and sends emergency services.

You can wear your emergency button in three ways:

  • Around your neck as a pendant, at breastbone height and at least 1m from the ground, (accessory: adjustable cord);
  • Attached to your suit, at chest height and at least 1m from the ground (accessory: brooch);
  • On your waist, at least 80cm from the ground, attached to your belt (accessory: belt clip).

Your emergency button or medical alert button evaluates variations in height and orientation by considering horizontal position and speed of movement to differentiate between a fall and your movements in daily life.

No matter how you wear your device, be careful when you take it off or put it somewhere as it is a very sensitive device. A beeping sound means that your action has triggered an alarm: you must cancel it by pressing the button on the main unit.

Who needs a fall detector?

Automatic fall detection for enhanced senior safety.

A fall detection system can be essential, especially for people who are vulnerable and weakened by:

  • Loneliness;
  • Age:
  • Problems with balance and orientation, vision, joints…;
  • Diseases that commonly afflict seniors.

Therefore, a fall detection system is ideal in any security system for the elderly. This is also important for people who are:

Undergoing special treatment that may affect their autonomy;

Suffering from a dysfunction of the vestibular system of the inner ear, disorientation, muscle weakness… regardless of age.

Different functions of a fall detector with monitoring services

Medical Alert Systems Canada has partnered with security companies that offer fall detection systems connected to a central monitoring station. These devices offer the following benefits:

  • Ergonomic and waterproof;
  • LED Status and audible signal to indicate that an alarm has been triggered;
  • Alert button (to send an emergency signal) and cancel button (to cancel the sending of the emergency signal within 30 seconds after the fall or the event that led to the fall detection);
  • For some models: dual control (2 buttons pressed simultaneously) to avoid false alarms;
  • Delay of generally 30 seconds before the alarm is triggered, during which a beep is heard, allowing the user to get up and/or cancel the sending of an emergency signal;
  • Option to adjust the sensitivity of the device’s sensors to the user’s preference;
  • Battery-operated device that can be replaced;
  • Contact with the monitoring center, and with pre-registered numbers, wherever you are in your home.

Other related medical alert systems

A panic button is a security device that can be used in different areas and whose function is to allow the user to send an emergency signal (siren or silent alarm) in case of emergencies such as:

  • Intrusion;
  • Aggression;
  • Illness;
  • A fall;
  • Burglary;
  • Robbery;
  • Beginning of a fire;
  • For counseling (especially for an elderly person living alone)…

Apart from keeping the user safe at home, especially if the person is elderly, a panic button can be used in different places:

At work;

A bank;

A public place (hospital, airport, restaurant…);

A place in which one can be locked up by accident (ex.: cold storage…)

Depending on the circumstances, a panic button can be installed:

  • In a discreet or secret location to allow the user to send an emergency signal without the knowledge of the perpetrators;
  • In a prominent place to allow the user to quickly send an emergency signal in situations such as a fire.

As previously discussed, a panic button used for home security can be worn around the neck at sternum height, at chest height, at the waist, and even around the wrist and have the main unit   installed on a wall or placed on a piece of furniture.

For use in non-residential settings, panic buttons are mainly installed on the wall, under a desk, or even under a counter. In the case of hospitals and specialized residences, the medical alert system can be:

  • On the wall, accessible to the patient or resident: with cords to pull the wall buttons for people with reduced mobility or with physical disabilities, with loudspeaker and microphone for those who have more autonomy;
  • Integrated into the bed to facilitate the sending of alerts for bedridden people;
  • On a piece of furniture like a bedside table.

To find out which type of panic button is suitable for your needs, we invite you to contact Medical Alert Systems Canada by filling out the form on this page.

Protection after a fall for seniors.

What to do while waiting for help?

Two scenarios can happen if you have a fall but remain conscious.

  • You can get up/stand up:
  • You can’t get up.

If you are unable to get up:

  • Send the emergency signal by pressing your panic button;
  • Calmly address the operator who answers your call and describe the situation as precisely as possible;
  • Try as much as possible to cover yourself, wedge a pillow under your head, and move your feet/fingers/etc.
  • Choose the most comfortable resting position and wait until help arrives.

If you can get up by yourself:

Cancel a possible emergency signal (confirmed by a beep) by pressing the cancel button unless you feel pain or need help;
Catch your breath and check for injuries;
Lie on your side and bend your top leg;
Pull yourself up with your elbow or hands;
Reach a solid object by sliding up to it;
Support yourself on the object using both hands;
Kneel down;
Stand up slowly but surely with your strongest leg and a firm grip on the object;
Turn around and stand up carefully.

Companies that offer emergency bracelets with fall detectors

A fall or a sudden illness…

Elderly people are afraid of such things happening to them.  They could develop a fear of falling and restrict their movements which results in isolation and reduced mobility.

Fall detectors are practical for elderly people who have a fear of falling. This may result in self-imposed isolation by limiting their movements and staying in a confined space.

Fall detector systems are ideal for seniors who are afraid of falling or have a history of falls. These products offer tele-assistance for emergency support services.  This can provide the user and his caregivers with peace of mind.

A panic button can be worn as a bracelet, clip, or pendant which is used to send a signal to a monitoring station during an emergency.  The user can summon help simply by pressing the alarm button.

The central station then responds using the voice communication system in the device (no phone line needed)

If there is no answer or if there is an emergency, the contact persons listed in the contract (neighbors, family…) are informed for quick intervention.

If the contact persons cannot be reached or they are not available, the operator must contact emergency services.

Note: There are fall detectors that transmit a signal even if the alarm button is not pressed. If the individual has lost consciousness, this can be quite useful.

What are the benefits of getting a fall detector?

Do you think that a fall detector is not so important compared to your other needs?

You may not know the many advantages you can get from this device. Many elderly persons are now choosing to protect themselves with a medical alert bracelet.

A fall detector is the best way to ensure the safety and well-being of an aging relative. But the benefits of this type of device is not limited to seniors.

In Canada, fall detectors are specifically designed for:

1. Reduce the response time of emergency services in case of a fall

As soon as the fall detector recognizes an impact resembling a fall, an automated alert signal is sent to a monitoring center.

Within a few minutes, emergency services will be informed of the situation and will rush to the scene.

2. Maintaining the person’s sense of security and confidence

Seniors who have already fallen often fear the next one.

This causes them to change their habits and lose their confidence, contributing to the decline of their faculties.

3. Prolong a person’s autonomy as long as possible

For elderly people who are still independent, balance problems can compromise their ability to live alone in their own homes.

However, a fall detector can prolong independence for as long as possible! With such a fall detection device on the wrist, even an elderly person can continue to live independently for a longer time.

4. Reassure relatives of the safety of the user

The loved ones of an elderly person living alone often feel anxious about the possibility of an accident.

A fall detector monitored by a professional monitoring center can reduce anxiety because it ensures rapid intervention in case of a medical or any other type of emergency.

The list of benefits of fall detector bracelets is quite long! Know more by speaking to our partners by filling out the short online form on this page.

Is a fall detector right for YOU?

There are several panic buttons and personal emergency systems on the market including GPS bracelets, manually activated panic buttons, wall mounted buttons, etc.

Fall detectors are part of this long list, but are they for YOU?

Here are the characteristics of individuals who benefit most from the fall detection device!

  • Individuals with balance problems
  • Seniors living alone
  • People in poor health
  • Workers at risk and alone
  • Pregnant women

Do you fall into any of these categories? Take the time to compare your options with the help of the partner companies of Medical Alert Systems Canada!

ALL the features of a GOOD fall detector!

Buying a fall detector is for the protection of your health or the health of a loved one. Therefore, you must choose an emergency device with the right features.

Since not all fall detectors are created equal – here are the features to look for!

  • A manual activation button

Even the most advanced fall detector panic buttons aren’t perfect. Therefore, your emergency device may not automatically activate when you fall. That’s why your fall detector must have a manual activation button.

  • An integrated accelerometer

Inside your fall detection device, it is the accelerometer that plays the most important role in sensing impacts similar to falls. The quality and accuracy of the accelerometer will play an important role in the accuracy of your device.

  • A cellular or satellite network connection

Any panic button connected to a control panel must be able to establish a connection to the cellular or satellite network.

This is the same connection that will allow you to talk to personnel of a central monitoring station in case of an emergency, and this is a very important feature.

  • A device in the form of a bracelet or pendant

Panic buttons now come in many forms. However, when it comes to fall detectors, it’s best to choose a device in the form of a bracelet or pendant.

These models are the most effective at detecting falls as they will often hit the ground with you!

Why add GPS functionality to your fall detector?

A growing number of fall detectors are now equipped with a GPS chip! This technology makes it possible to track the user with great accuracy in case of an emergency.

But why choose a fall detector with a GPS function?

Because in case of a fall, if you were to be unconscious or unable to communicate your location to the central station, it would be difficult to get help to you. By being equipped with a GPS chip, the central station will be able to locate you in a few seconds.

Does everyone benefit from fall detectors with GPS functionality?

For many people, the GPS chip is a little too invasive. However, for people with Alzheimer’s disease, this bracelet is very useful in case of a dementia episode or confusion.

Is it necessary to get a fall detector with 24/7 monitoring?

Some fall detectors are not connected to a central monitoring center but to a simple application. Do not make the mistake of buying such a device.

Why is it ESSENTIAL for the device to be connected to a central monitoring center?

The principle behind the fall detector system is that it will quickly alert qualified personnel in the event of a fall or a health emergency. It is essential that such a device be connected to a central monitoring station that is operational at all times.

What is the role of the monitoring center connected to your fall detector?

To respond to your distress signal, to reassure you and, above all, to send help as quickly as possible!

If you should be in a vulnerable position, the central monitoring center’s dispatchers will be the first to lend you a hand. Their role in your safety and security is CRITICAL and can save your life!

Do health professionals recommend fall detectors?

Healthcare professionals recommend that individuals at risk of falling have an automated fall detection device.

But BEWARE – The Fall Detector can’t do all the work for you!

Professionals consider the fall detector as an additional protection that does not replace health care, exercise programs, and supervision of the individual at risk of falling.

A fall detector can reduce the severe consequences of falls, not to prevent them! It is, therefore, essential that you speak with your health care professional to maximize your own personal safety.

Tax credit for home support for seniors: Your chance to save!

Are you afraid of getting charged an exorbitant bill when you buy a fall detector?

Know that the Tax Credit for home support for seniors could save you a lot of money! What is the tax credit for home support for seniors?

This tax credit provides financial assistance to seniors for services needed in their homes. Services covered by this tax credit include:

  • Emergency call services activated by a device (e.g. fall detector)
  • GPS tracking services (e.g. GPS bracelet)
  • Nursing services
  • Home assistance services

What is the maximum amount you can get for your fall detector?

The tax credit for home support for seniors is 35% of the expenses incurred during the year for home support services. The maximum eligible expenses are $19,500 for a single independent person and $25,500 for a single non-independent person.

Frequently asked questions about fall detectors

Does a fall detector help prevent falls and other incidents?

Health professionals agree that a fall detector can help minimize the impact of a fall on a person’s health because of the rapid response of emergency services.

However, only an adapted training program and an optimization of the living space can really prevent falls in a person’s home.

Will your loved ones be notified if you have a fall?

If they are on your “contact” list, the answer is yes! The staff at the central office will first contact you to check your health, and then contact the emergency services to send help to you. Your contacts will then be informed.

Can a fall detector fail to send an alert after a fall?

Yes, it is possible! Accelerometers are not infallible. A fall may not send the automated alert signal, which is why it is essential to press the manual button if you fall.

What are the best brands of fall detectors on the market?

Philips LifeLine, Telus Health Companion, LifeCall, Global Security, and Secure-Vie Canada are on top of the list in the panic button industry in Canada. Each of these brands offers unique and versatile products.

A good fall detector is wearable (bracelet or pendant) and can recognize a slip or a fall automatically and alert a monitoring center that you need help. This happens even if you don’t call anyone. Thus, if you fall unconscious, help will arrive so you can get medical attention even when you are all alone.

As many seniors desire to continue to live in their own homes, a fall detection system will allow them the independence and comfort they want without compromising their safety.

What is a medical alert system with fall detection?

Senior presses panic button for help after a fall.

he leading cause of injury among the elderly in Canada is falls, with an estimated 30% having one or more falls annually. More than 30% of seniors admitted in hospitals for fall-related injuries subsequently go into long-term care after hospitalization.

Falls can result in reduced mobility, chronic pain, loss of independence, and death.  These are frightening statistics but there is hope.

Studies show that immediate medical assistance after a fall can help to reduce the severe health consequences and prevent death. This is where medical alert systems with fall detection come in.

A medical alert system is a wearable device, usually in the form of a bracelet or a pendant that has a HELP button to push in case of an emergency. When the user pushes the panic button, a trained emergency agent responds via the communication system that is built into the device.

That’s right, no phone is needed to talk to a LIVE person to ask for help.

After assessing the situation quickly, the agent will send medical responders to your home within minutes to provide the help you need.

Falls do happen but they can be prevented. A medical alert system with fall detection gives an extra layer of support for seniors.

What is fall detection and how does it work?

Fall detection is an additional feature that can be added to a medical alert system. This technology detects falls automatically using built-in sensors that work with algorithms to distinguish a fall from normal movements. Data such as speed and height are evaluated by accelerometers to identify if a fall occurred.

When a senior is wearing a fall detector, an alert is automatically sent to a monitoring center after a fall. This happens even if the user fails to push the panic button because he is unconscious, disoriented, or unable to move.

Why is fall detection essential? Data shows that many seniors who experience a fall lie on the floor unconscious, hurt, or bleeding for hours, sometimes days, because they were alone and unable to call for help. This period of delay before medical assistance arrives can aggravate injuries and even cause death.

This is also one of the major reasons why many seniors have to move into assisted living facilities- they need to be assured that if something bad happens, someone will be there to help.

With fall detection, seniors can extend living independently without fear and their loved ones can have peace of mind.

Types of Medical Alert Systems

Wearable medical alert system in a pendant.

Now that you know the important benefits you can get from a medical alert system, it is time to find out what type of system will suit your needs.

Medical alert system companies offer a variety of solutions tailored to different needs, lifestyles, and budgets.  Below are the most prevalent ones you can find on the market.

At-home medical alert systems (Basic)

These basic systems suitable for use inside the home are connected to a landline or cellular system. They include a console unit and a portable device (pendant, bracelet, or watch) with a panic button to press for emergency assistance.

This type of system is the cheapest type of plan and has a limited range (from 200 ft. to 600 ft.) Note that cellular systems are a bit more expensive than landline systems.

Mobile Systems/On-the-Go

Mobile medical alert systems offer greater protection because of their wider coverage. They can be used outside the home where there is cellular coverage. This means you can call for emergency assistance using your panic button wherever you are.

Mobile systems also offer other features for greater protection such as GPS tracking and geo-fencing which are useful for seniors who wander.

Fall detectors

Fall detection systems, whether at-home plans or mobile, cost a little more because of this added technology. A fall detector has the same features as basic and mobile plans. Users can still manually press the HELP button to call for emergency assistance. However, if an actual fall occurs, the fall detector will automatically send an alert to the monitoring center. This means that a senior who has fallen and cannot press the help button will have someone respond to the incident. An agent will try to contact the user through the built-in communication system to verify what happened and send appropriate help. If the user cannot be reached, help will be dispatched as quickly as possible.

Fall detectors are all-in-one systems. You don’t have to wear or carry a separate device for fall detection as your pendant will have your panic button with fall detection, GPS, medication reminder, and other features you choose!

Is fall detection technology accurate?

Reliability of fall detection technology.

If you are considering buying a fall detector for your protection, you may be wondering if fall detection technology is accurate. Is it worth buying a medical alert system with fall detection?

Many of these devices are said to be able to detect at least 85% of falls. Studies further show that a device worn close to the user’s center of gravity, specifically a pendant or necklace, has a higher level of accuracy.

Some medical alert systems claim 93% accuracy for fall detection. While it is not perfect, as most systems are, this high level of accuracy can provide seniors with a high level of protection and security in case of a fall.

False alerts are possible but they are easily canceled by the user by speaking to the agent to say you don’t need help or pressing the button twice.

False alerts or calls for help are not charged as they are included in the monthly service you pay for.

Medical alert systems can reduce the risk of long-term injury with early detection and monitoring. Prompt emergency response to any emergency can save your life!

While it is very important to try to prevent falls from occurring, it is also important to be prepared in case it happens.

With so many elderly people living alone or staying home alone, fall detection systems have become quite useful.

The early detection of a fall will ensure that an emergency response team will arrive quickly to intervene and mitigate serious consequences such as trauma, bleeding, or fractures which can have adverse effects.

Are you worried about an elderly loved one? Find out how a fall detection device can keep your loved one safe and compare prices of the top devices using our short online form.

How does fall detection work?

Panic button with fall detection technology.

Fall detection technologies were built into panic buttons and medical alert systems to automatically detect a fall when a user collapses. When a fall occurs, built-in sensors analyze data such as height, speed, and change in altitude, among others, and send out an alert to a monitoring center or an emergency contact list.

Once the monitoring center receives an alert, an agent trained in handling emergencies will attempt to contact you through the communication system on your device. That’s right, no phone line is needed to get connected, making it much easier and faster to speak to someone during an emergency.

Note that fall detection devices are wearable – on the neck, waist, or wrist, and are easy to carry to make sure that a senior is always ready to call for immediate assistance in any type of emergency.

Whether at home or outside the home, fall detection devices such as medical alert bracelets work 24/7 for your safety and peace of mind.

Aging at home safely and without fear is now made possible through innovative and reliable medical alert systems with fall detection.

The Many Benefits of Fall Detection Devices

Automatic fall detection technology for seniors.

Medical alert systems with automatic fall detection were designed to secure HELP after a fall or slip. These devices target vulnerable seniors and people living with disabilities or medical conditions that put them at risk.

Even workers who are in isolated settings or using dangerous equipment also benefit from the device as it will summon help when they need it.

One of the most important benefits of a panic button with fall detection is that if you fall and become unconscious or cannot speak, a monitoring center will be informed of your status and send help fast. If you fail to press the panic button after a fall, the fall detector will automatically send out an alert.

It can be concluded that these fall detection systems not only improve the safety and well-being of seniors but also gives peace of mind to family members. Seniors can have more confidence to live a healthy lifestyle without fear or have more assurance even while staying alone at home.

Immediate medical attention from an injury is ESSENTIAL as some injuries can prove fatal. With a fall detection device, you are sure to receive emergency services quickly, no matter where you are.

Reasons to use a panic button with fall detection

Emergency medical services from panic buttons.

Although seniors or older adults have a higher risk of falling, some health conditions necessitate the use of a panic button regardless of age.

According to the CDC, some factors increase the risk of falling, including:

  • Poor balance and gait problems;
  • Medications;
  • Vision problems;
  • Ankle or foot disorders;
  • A history of falls;
  • Muscle weakness;
  • Conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, etc.
  • Fear of falling.

The length of time that a senior adult has fallen and cannot get up on their own is critical. Research indicates that the “lie time” reaching 72 hours or more increases mortality by as much as 67%.  For seniors living alone, the danger of lying on the floor hurt or unconscious can reach many hours or days.

This is one of the biggest reasons to invest in an emergency necklace or panic button that offers 24/7 monitoring.

It must be noted that the person must be willing to wear the device at all times to maximize its benefits.

If you plan on giving a panic button to a parent or an elderly relative, it is advisable to discuss it with the intended user first.

How reliable are these fall detection devices?

Security companies will tell you that no system can guarantee fall detection accurately by 100%. There is no fool-proof system, like most systems are.  But these fall detection devices can detect about 85% of falls accurately.

Studies show that devices worn close to the center of gravity of the user, such as a pendant or necklace, provide the highest accuracy for fall detection.

While false alerts cannot be totally avoided, they are quite easy to cancel. If an alert is triggered by accidentally pressing the button or if you didn’t have a fall, just tell the agent you don’t need help. With most devices, you can simply press the button again to cancel the alert.

Regardless of the possibility of false alerts, the benefits obtained from your fall detection device in the event of an actual fall can save your life. Thus, it is important for all seniors to have a panic button bracelet or pendant for protection.

It must also be noted that security companies do not charge extra for medical or emergency alerts. They are included in the monthly fees for your monitoring services.

How much does an automatic fall detector cost?

Medical alert systems come in two types for fall detection: manual and automatic.

With a manual system, the user must press the panic button after a fall to connect to a monitoring center or to begin an alert for an established contact list.

The big disadvantage of this type of system is that if the user falls and becomes unconscious and does not press the button, no alert is sent out. This means that help will be delayed until a family member or relative comes to check on the user.  If the senior was injured or in pain, the consequences of delayed medical attention can be quite serious.

Some medical alert systems offer automatic fall detection. If the user skids or falls, the device can automatically recognize the fall and notify the monitoring center, even if the user does not press the button.

This feature can be a lifesaver especially if the user is injured or incapacitated after a fall. Help will come within minutes once the fall alert is received by trained emergency agents.

Automatic fall detection systems are more expensive than manual ones but the price difference is not that significant. Hence, it pays to pay just a little more to be able to benefit from this very essential protection for seniors!

How do medical alert systems for seniors work?

Emergency services with a press of a button.

Medical alert systems can be challenging for seniors to understand, especially if using for the first time.

There are key differences in the many medical alert systems available on the market – monitored and unmonitored systems, at-home systems and mobile systems, with automatic fall detection, GPS tracking, etc.

Hence, the variety of options can be overwhelming. We want to help you find the right system for your needs by explaining in detail how medical alert systems for seniors work.

Components of a medical alert system

Medical alert systems have 2 parts – the device (panic button) and the 24-7 monitoring service.

Systems for home use have a base unit (console) while mobile systems don’t generally have one. The console is plugged in your home and connects to your wearable device.

The panic or help button is worn on the neck or wrist or clipped to a belt. It communicates with the console. Depending on the type of plan you choose, your device can include additional features such as medication reminder, GPS tracking, fall detection, etc.

Medical alert systems also feature a voice communication system that allows you to speak to a trained emergency agent using your console or device.

Installing the medical alert system

Providers aim to make the system easy to use. Installation usually involves plugging the console into an electrical outlet and checking that the panic button works. Most companies offer self-installation and customer support. Some provides charge a one-time activation fee.

Professional Monitoring Services

The second important component of a medical alert system is the monitoring services. Upon pressing the help button, a user will be connected quickly (20 to 30 seconds on average) to a trained agent at the monitoring center. A user can press the panic button in a medical emergency, to summon the police, or in case of fire.

A senior can also ask for assistance in non-medical emergencies such as needing to contact a relative to assist.

Some systems have automatic fall detection which alerts the monitoring center if the user falls.  Built-in sensors can detect a fall and send an alert so that emergency services can be dispatched quickly.

Monitoring services have an ongoing monthly charge. Some providers don’t require a long term contract while other companies do.

Can you get an unmonitored medical alert system to save money? Yes, you can, but remember that the response to your emergency depends on the availability of the person/s receiving the alert.

If your panic button sends the alert to a family member who is not always available, a response to your emergency is not guaranteed. These unmonitored systems also don’t offer any support if you encounter problems with your device.

Types of medical alert systems

Medical alert systems can be at-home or mobile systems

Systems dedicated for home use are suitable for adults with mobility issues, chronic diseases, balance issues, recovering from surgery or injury, or with disabilities.

These systems can use landline or cellular connections.  For seniors who want to extend their independence, at-home medical alert systems are essential.

In any emergency, the user needs to press the help button to connect to a monitoring center to ask for assistance. Caregivers or contacts on a pre-established list can also be notified of an emergency.

This means that a senior living alone can easily and quickly get help without having to dial a landline or mobile phone.

In contrast, seniors with more active lifestyles can choose the more sophisticated mobile systems. These devices use cellular networks and offer protection even while on the go. Features such as fall detection and GPS tracking enhance the user’s protection. Seniors with dementia or Alzheimer’s will benefit from GPS tracking so they can be quickly located if they wander or become disoriented.

Regardless of how often you go outside your home, mobile medical alert systems will offer an easy and convenient way to ask for help in any emergency.

Using a medical alert system

When a user presses the help button on the at-home medical alert system using the console or the pendant, a staff from the monitoring center will receive the user’s location and information. With two-way communication, you can speak to a professional agent directly who will send help based on your type of emergency.

The response time is in seconds, not minutes, and emergency responders can arrive at your home as quickly as possible to lend a hand.

Is a panic button only for medical emergencies? Not at all. Do you feel unwell? Do you think an intruder is trying to break into your house? Did you fall and can’t get up?  Are you lost and can’t find your way? Have you locked yourself in the bathroom or need help getting dressed? You can use your help button to call for help in any type of situation that threatens your safety, health, or well-being.

If the situation requires a family member to be contacted, the monitoring center will get in touch with your listed kin or contact person.

This is why medical alert systems are also referred to as personal emergency response systems (PERS).

It is important to understand that you need to press the panic button to receive emergency assistance. It is recommended that you get a waterproof device that can be worn even in the bath for non-stop protection.

Do you need fall detection?

A senior falls during a heart attack.

Fall detection technology can be built into your medical alert system so that someone is alerted in case of a fall.  Sensors, also called accelerometers, detect unusual motion when you fall and notifies the monitoring center that you may be in distress. Most companies offer automatic fall detection as an additional feature with an extra charge monthly.

These fall detection devices have sensors in the GPS-enabled mobile device that can be worn as a watch or pendant. Studies show that pendants or panic buttons worn around the neck are more accurate in terms of fall detection because movements with the hand such as waving can lead to false alerts.

How accurate is fall detection technology?

Ambient sensors and algorithms have about 85 to 93% accuracy for fall detection. While it isn’t 100%, it is quite close.

If your fall detection device sends out a notification, the monitoring center staff will try to contact you to find out what happened.  If you can speak, you can provide details so they know exactly how to help you. If you cannot speak, the monitoring center staff will send emergency assistance.

In case of a false alert or if you don’t need help, you can tell the monitoring center that everything is fine and the alert will be disregarded. You can also cancel an alert by pressing the panic button twice.

In any case, having someone notified quickly after a fall is worth it despite the possibility of false alerts. For seniors, quick response in a health emergency is vital and can mean life or death.

Who should use a medical alert system?

GPS Security Bracelet: A solution for people with Alzheimer’s?

GPS security bracelet for senior safety.

Alzheimer’s disease is a difficult ordeal for both the person with the disease and their loved ones. The effects of the disease on cognitive faculties are difficult to live with for many people, but such a diagnosis does not have to mean the end of one’s independence.

Assistive technologies have become sufficiently developed to allow Alzheimer’s patients to maintain a normal life for as long as possible. That’s exactly the case with GPS security bracelets designed specifically for people with Alzheimer’s disease!

Find out how such devices could help your loved ones maintain the lifestyle they deserve for as long as possible with Alzheimer’s security bracelets.

What is a GPS security bracelet for people with Alzheimer's?

A GPS bracelet is a technological device that is worn on the wrist and allows the wearer to be geo-located. Using an application and GPS technology that communicates with the bracelet, the person’s precise location can be identified remotely within seconds.

Why are these GPS bracelets useful for people with Alzheimer’s disease?

Because wandering is part of the effects of Alzheimer’s disease which makes people with the disease more likely to get lost.  Disorientation, confusion, and memory problems all increase the chances of getting lost which can cause stressful and dangerous episodes for everyone involved.

With a GPS bracelet, however, these episodes are shorter and less frequent since the bracelet makes it possible to quickly locate a missing person. GPS bracelets and fall detectors can be combined into a single device for complete protection. These technologies provide protection for everyone, including loved ones and the person with Alzheimer’s disease.

Why not take the time to compare options and prices with Medical Alert Systems Canada’s partners?

The advantages of a GPS security bracelet!

Purchasing a GPS security bracelet comes with a host of benefits for both the person wearing the bracelet and the caregiver. Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s comes with many unpredictable challenges that a GPS bracelet helps you control.

These GPS bracelets provide you with several benefits, including

  • Increased sense of security
  • Decreased stress/anxiety
  • Quick location in case of wandering
  • Respect of privacy
  • Greater freedom

These bracelets allow the person with Alzheimer’s disease to preserve a maximum of independence for as long as possible. It is a GPS technology for the benefit of all the relatives involved!

GPS security bracelet respects privacy

Having Alzheimer’s disease does not eliminate the right to dignity and privacy. However, this is a concern raised by many people who are reluctant to purchase such devices for their loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease. How can these concerns be addressed?

How do GPS bracelets respect the right to privacy?

While it is possible to know the location of the person wearing the bracelet at all times, it is also possible to restrict access to this information to the strict minimum. A “life zone” can be set wherein the person will not be tracked to respect his or her privacy.

In addition, it is important to keep in mind that the safety of the person with Alzheimer’s disease is the number one consideration that should take precedence over everything else.

How much does a GPS bracelet for Alzheimer's patients cost?

Geolocation technologies for seniors with Alzheimer’s are obviously expensive, but are they as expensive as you might think?

Far from it! With the rise in popularity of GPS bracelets and fall detection bracelets, prices have become competitive on the market, allowing you to benefit from more options to get a fair price.

Are GPS chips hidden in these devices?

Yes, they are! The various devices mentioned in the table are designed to hide the GPS chips and offer a discreet but effective geolocation technology. GPS technology is, therefore, hidden in an everyday accessory.

Has the effectiveness of GPS safety bracelets been proven? For people with Alzheimer’s, studies have shown that GPS bracelets reduce the time it takes to find a wandering person. Because the user’s location can be pinpointed within seconds, authorities can be quickly dispatched to the scene, if needed. The safety of the person is, therefore, significantly improved.

How accurate are GPS bracelets?

GPS bracelet manufacturers claim that GPS technologies are accurate enough to locate a person to within 10 meters. This allows a loved one with Alzheimer’s to maintain a high degree of freedom, knowing that if they are at risk or wander, they will be quickly located.

Alzheimer’s does not have to be the end of independence.

With the effectiveness and accuracy of GPS bracelets for Alzheimer’s, independence and freedom can be preserved, and even increased, by years.

Just explore the wristband options and trust this time-tested technology!

Medical Alert Systems Canada finds the right GSP security bracelet for YOU!

Maintaining one’s independence and privacy are important values to preserve for people with Alzheimer’s disease. GPS bracelets are the tools of choice to help preserve these same values for many years to come.

MedicAlert bracelets: A solution for the safety of seniors

If you are a senior citizen with certain medical issues and suddenly find yourself in an emergency situation, first responders need to be able to access accurate information about your health status quickly.

If such a situation arises, MedicAlert can be a great solution. Your MedicAlert bracelet, watch, or necklace contains the following information:

  • MedicAlert’s phone number, whose emergency service can be contacted 24 hours a day
  • Your membership number
  • Your emergency medical needs.

Did you know that emergency care professionals are trained to look for the MedicAlert medical ID in emergency situations?

Your MedicAlert ID speaks for you. By contacting the MedicAlert emergency service, first responders can have instant access to your detailed medical profile (which you will have sent via the Internet). However, rest assured that your personal information is confidential and highly secure.

This way, if you are unable to communicate to explain your health problem because you are in pain, you can still be treated quickly and effectively.

The panic button as a complement or an alternative

Panic button for senior safety.

You can also use a panic button to call for help without having to use a phone line or cell phone. Simply press the button on a medical alert bracelet, pendant, or clip worn on your belt.

Within seconds, a trained agent will speak to you through the two-way communication unit in your home and send you the appropriate help. They will also contact your family and loved ones according to your pre-established list. If rescue workers are notified, any medical information they may need will be provided to them.

Some personal panic button models are also equipped with a “fall detector”. This intelligent system sends an alert to the monitoring center without you having to press the button if you are on the ground, unconscious.

Panic buttons offer increased security for seniors and individuals with medical conditions.

Who is MedicAlert?

MedicAlert logo.

MedicAlert Foundation Canada has been part of the MedicAlert Foundation International Group of Companies for over 50 years.

How did MedicAlert come about?

Imagine that your child has a serious cut on his finger.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the doctors administer a vaccine to eliminate a possible tetanus infection.

Your child has a severe allergic reaction to the antitoxin to the point where he or she goes into severe anaphylactic shock. His life is threatened.

Your child survives, but you are still terrified.

This story happened in 1953. Linda Collins was a teenager. Her parents, Dr. Marion Collins and his wife, began pinning a note to Linda’s coat indicating her allergy every time she went out.

Later, they gave her a piece of jewelry as a gift: a silver bracelet with her name engraved on it, but her medical condition was also noted on the back. It was clear that having instant access to this kind of critical information could save other people’s lives as well.

Today, this charity, which started in the living room of dedicated parents, has grown to an international scale. Emergency identifiers (MedicAlert bracelet, pendant, watch…) allow police, paramedics, and medical personnel to know your medical history in about five (5) seconds and to notify your loved ones at any time, in case of an emergency.

Why choose MedicAlert bracelets?

MedicAlert Foundation International operates in 25 countries and offers services in over 140 languages. No matter where you are in the world, emergency physicians and health professionals will have instant access to your medical information in a way that they can understand simply by dialing the emergency phone number engraved on your MedicAlert bracelet, necklace, or watch. This service is essential to all travelers.

MedicAlert’s emergency phone service can transmit your updated and detailed medical information to first responders quickly.

  • 24 hours
  • 7 days a week

When a call is received, the average response time is 5 seconds.

In addition, MedicAlert offers a free application that allows you to update and view your medical information on the interface of your choice.

In addition to providing emergency responders with quality training on the globally accepted medical terms engraved on the IDs, MedicAlert regularly issues relevant and useful information on a variety of health topics.

MedicAlert personalized identifiers, also sold in pharmacies, are available in a wide selection of models to suit all lifestyles (watch, bracelet, pendant, etc.) as well as the needs of children and seniors. You will also receive a wallet card. This contains your most important medical information as well as the contact information of the people to be notified in case of an emergency.

But if you are unable to speak…

For help to reach you as quickly as possible in a medical emergency, they must first be notified. If you are unable to speak but are wearing a bracelet, pendant, or clip with a built-in personal panic button, you can press it and help will be sent to you immediately.

What are the alternatives to MedicAlert bracelets?

MedicAlert bracelet VS panic button

The fact that you can wear a personal medical alert device is a totally different concept.

Indeed, the emergency call button can be worn:

  • around the neck: built into a pendant,
  • on the wrist: like a watch,
  • on the belt: clip system like a pager or a cell phone,
  • on a key ring,
  • etc.

In the event of an emergency, illness, or danger, all you have to do is press the button which is clearly visible and accessible to receive help without delay.

Within 20 seconds of your request for help, a trained agent will contact you. You can then explain your situation and what you need.

Your personal panic button is available with a signal range of 30 m (100 feet) or an unlimited signal range.

If you are unable to speak, the monitoring agent will immediately notify your loved ones, neighbors, or emergency services according to a list you have established in advance, following the order of priority you have set. Your contacts can also be contacted by text message or on the interface of their choice.

When transmitting your contact information to first-line responders, the monitoring agent also transmits your medical particularities as well as all the information you disclosed when you filled out your application form.

A fall detector for the elderly

Fall detectors to protect the elderly.

Some panic buttons include a fall detector.  The signal emitted is picked up by the remote monitoring center without you having to press the panic button. This emergency assistance for the elderly is very popular.

It is an intelligent system designed to detect a violent impact or sudden movement. The fall detector allows you to be more independent and to be independent for longer.

Features of your panic button

Some of the most advantageous features of panic buttons include:

  • Waterproof,
  • Have long-lasting lithium batteries that can be replaced,
  • Have a built-in LED light to confirm the alarm,
  • Are designed to prevent false alarms,
    • Have a recessed button to prevent accidentally pressing the button,
    • 2 second delay.

The most versatile personal panic button

Your medical alert bracelet can perform multiple functions. For example, if an entire day goes by without any movement being detected, a notification can be sent to your contacts.

Your package can also include a medication reminder service. This involves the emission of audible and visual signals at specific times.

In addition to having 24/7 medical assistance via IP or landline, emergency operators will stay in touch with you until the first responders arrive. They will be able to reassure you, advise you, etc.

It is also possible to associate the panic button medical assistance service with a residential remote monitoring package for protection against attempted intrusion, fire, water leak, etc.

Nearly 300,000 people over the age of 65 fall every year in Canada! Falls account for the hospitalization of many seniors and keep them in bed for long periods.

Among these patients, the most likely to be injured are women in their 80s who live alone (with incomes under $15,000). Between 1997 and 2002, more than 7,000 seniors lost their lives due to falls. About 180,000 falls resulting to injury are reported in Canada each year. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, elderly falls continue to be a serious health issue.

Fortunately, there are safety products to prevent worsening of injuries or to quickly alert the emergency services: panic buttons!

Most elderly people want to remain independent for as long as possible. Thanks to the emergency buttons that are installed in homes or that can be worn as a safety bracelet or pendant, seniors can continue to live alone and be active without fear of falling. The many dangers of living alone should not be ignored either. The adaptation of a home to the capacities of its owner remains a priority. The living environment, including common perils (such as a staircase without a handrail, a shifting rug, or a bathtub without a safety bar), will also need to be reviewed to decrease the chances of a fall. Accident prevention should be on everyone’s mind!

To ensure the safety of a senior, or to adequately protect an area prone to criminals, turn to the panic button. Increasingly common in businesses, seniors’ homes, hospitals, and factories, it is an effective way to contact the authorities or loved ones who will react to the situation.

Whether you are suffering from temporary discomfort or disorientation, or you observe an unpleasant incident (such as an intruder in your home), a panic button offers a simple way to alert a list of predetermined contacts. With just one touch, you can be connected to a monitoring center and speak to a specialized emergency agent.

  • A highly-trained emergency specialist will react to your distress call by:
  • Dispatching an ambulance;
  • Notifying law enforcement in case of an intrusion;
  • Notifying the fire department in case of a fire;
  • Notifying your building’s security (or nursing) department of your distress.

This technology has been protecting patients and nurses in hospitals for many years. Many businesses defend their interests from burglars with emergency buttons. You can also find them in psychiatric institutions to alert specialists of a sudden event.

Take advantage of the experience of a network of home and commercial security experts to save money on your medical alert button.

Simply fill out the form on this page to get in touch with these specialists (selected because they have a clean record). They will determine, according to your selection criteria, the 3 most advantageous quotes for you.

THIS FREE AND NO-OBLIGATION SERVICE WILL SAVE YOU MONEY WHEN YOU BUY A PANIC BUTTON.

Thousands of people have emergency buttons installed in their homes or decide to wear devices that guarantee their safety when they travel to risky places. But who needs this kind of personal alarm system?

  • Anyone who is vulnerable or has some form of mental disability.
  • Workers in hazardous occupations.
  • Employees who, left on their own, may require immediate assistance (such as plowmen, truck drivers, security guards, etc.).
  • Citizens of a community where suspicious individuals (street gangs, burglars, bikers, etc.) are present.
  • Athletes who travel away from urban centers to train.
  • Seniors or those at risk of losing their independence.
  • Residents of a high-risk region (such as riverside residents subject to overflowing rivers, residents of northern cities that sometimes receive significant snowfall, etc.).
  • People who enjoy night walks and appreciate the security offered by such a device.

Now we know the reasons why people take advantage of panic buttons. Let’s talk about how this device can save your life!

Panic Button & Medical Bracelet in Canada: Save with the best companies

The job of a panic button is to connect the user with a central monitoring station that employs agents specially trained for all emergency situations.

No matter what the panic button looks like (simple button, bracelet, pendant, key chain, etc.), it will give you confidence since it acts as a distress signal the moment you press it. Note that some panic button models include fall detectors, which adds a comforting aspect for many seniors who suffer from vertigo. The fall detector will automatically sense a sudden, unusual movement to alert others of your condition. Oftentimes, these devices come in the form of an emergency bracelet.

Answers regarding monitoring stations and panic buttons

Understand how panic buttons work.

MONITORING CENTERS AND PANIC BUTTONS

Hours of operation

24 hours, 7 days a week

Time of response

Between 20 and 30 seconds on average.

The alarm is activated

The LED on your device is blinking.

Do you pay for each alert?

No. This service is included in your monthly plan.

Central Monitoring services keep you safe. Are you worried about false alarms if you accidentally press your panic button?

How are False Alarms prevented: Understanding the panic button

Several ways have been developed to prevent false alarms (i.e. by inadvertently activating your panic button).

  • The button itself is recessed, making it more difficult to activate accidentally.
  • Some models have two buttons that must be pressed simultaneously.
  • In many cases, pressing them for at least two seconds will trigger the alert, which reduces the chance of a misstep.
  • If the monitoring agent calls you, just inform him that you don’t have an emergency.

You can prevent false alarms with your panic button with these tips. How to use it effectively?

How to operate your panic button

This device is designed to be convenient and hassle-free to maintain high efficiency. To demonstrate each step of its operation, let’s see the complete process of activating your panic button:

Distress situation

  • A fall
  • A threatening event occurs
  • You feel unwell
  • etc.

You press the panic button

  • Your fall detector is triggered

Wait for approximately 20 (twenty) seconds

  • This allows you to deactivate the alert if it is a false alert or you don’t need help.

Communication is established

  • If you are able to speak, you will be able to communicate with an agent trained in emergency situations.
  • Unable to speak: don’t worry, help is on the way!

The Response

  • The appropriate responders will come to your rescue.
  • If a contact list has been established, they will be notified of your situation.

Identify the types of panic buttons: Wired or wireless, waterproof or water-resistant

Waterproof or water-resistant panic buttons.

Invariably, as in every field, there are categories. Panic buttons are no exception, and they are divided into wired and wireless devices.

In general, wired devices will plug into your electrical outlet and attach to a surface such as a wall within reach or under a counter (for those who prefer it out of sight.) This emergency button will be fixed in a hard box.

In contrast, a wireless panic button will look like an accessory or piece of jewelry for easy carrying. It can be worn on your wrist as a security bracelet or added to your key ring so that it is always nearby. You can also wear it as a necklace (in the form of a pendant) or wear it on your belt with a general-purpose clip.

WATERPROOF OR WATER RESISTANT?

Panic buttons are also divided into completely waterproof and water-resistant models (the former being preferable if you are thinking of taking a bath or believe you need to immerse the button in water).

Benefits of a fall detector and how does it work?

If you fall in an isolated place, alone, and without the possibility to activate your panic button, what happens? This is the primary function of the fall detector, which has an emergency button on some models. Should you fall, assistance will still be provided since a sophisticated motion detection system will activate the alert despite your state (unconscious or simply dazed). This function, integrated in many panic buttons, will extend your independence or reassure those around you when you are left to your own devices.

Reassure your loved ones and live with a clear conscience by choosing an emergency button model that includes this obvious benefit. In general, the device protects you no matter where you are. Its speaker system will put you in contact (day, evening, and night) with an agent from a monitoring center.

The panic buttons, equipped with two-way audio linked to your smartphone, will add further protection. This is optional. An ultra-sensitive sensor will better identify your condition and the circumstances of your distress situation.

The average range of the emergency button with a fall detector is 600 feet (almost 182 meters). Think of it as twice the length of a (Canadian) soccer field: that’s about the operating distance of this device. Don’t worry about the waves being stopped by water as they will travel through up to 3 feet of water.

Her mother wanted to remain independent.  Ms. Beard realized that for her mother to have peace of mind and feel comfortable in her home, she needed an easy and reliable way to communicate with family and friends in case of an emergency.

Her research uncovered a consistent market as the majority of available emergency systems came with expensive monthly monitoring fees. Likewise, she knew her mother would be reluctant to speak with a stranger who would contact her family or friends to help her anyway.

Unsatisfied with existing products in North America, she looked for alternatives and discovered the Smart Dialer, a proven solution widely used and recommended in Australia.

What is the best fall detector bracelet/pendant in Canada?

Fall detection technology for seniors.

SOPHISTICATED FALL DETECTION

Fall detection technology for seniors is becoming more and more advanced. What is most important about this technology is that it allows the elderly to remain independent longer. Studies in recent years have revealed alarming statistics regarding the risk of falls among Canadians aged 75 and over: 50% of them will fall!

Fortunately, state-of-the-art solutions exist.

The most popular device for detecting falls among the elderly is the fall detector. The device consists of one or more accelerometers and is available as a pendant, bracelet, or watch. Previously, this type of device could only be used around a central console (a few hundred feet of range). Lately, with the advent of cellular networks, fall detection bracelets/pendants work almost everywhere in Canada. The simplicity of the product makes it affordable and easy to use. Advanced telephone assistance and video surveillance systems will perform in a very professional manner to guarantee the safety of an individual who has suffered a fall.

Let’s see which of these personal security systems will offer the best protection!

If you would like more information about panic buttons and have security professionals assist you in your search, fill out the form on this page. It’s free and fast!

Which safety bracelet or pendant is best for detecting falls?

To fully understand how to distinguish the inferior models of fall detection bracelets or pendants from the more advanced devices, you must first know the essential features that they offer:

  • Process automation

  • Other advantages of the fall detector

Is automatic fall detection more effective?

No, not always. Various companies offer bracelets or pendants that feature fall detection. However, there’s more to it than just detecting motion.

To give you a better idea, here is an example:

You wear a bracelet on your left wrist that detects falls. One day, you notice that your garage door does not close properly because of the cold. You decide to give it a boost to close properly. If you momentarily forget that you are wearing your device on your wrist, a false alarm may be sent. Normally, a warning light will come on. If you notice this, press the button to turn it off and disable your call for help. If you do not see the light, a distress signal will be sent according to the established procedure.

This false alarm will simply not occur if you purchase a more advanced model that detects multiple types of motion.

Other benefits of a fall detector

Benefits of fall detectors.

Know how to identify when a device has only one function without support. To ensure your safety, the button on the device can be pressed at any time to call for help. It remains activated at all times to provide a quick link to those who can help you. An emergency button is also a way to communicate directly with a telecare service.

A fall detector bracelet/pendant will connect you to an agent at a security center to whom you can speak. If your device is linked to a cell phone line, you can use this feature anywhere (as long as you are on the cell phone network).

The Numera LIBRIS fall detector from Nortek – The Winner!

Medical Alert Systems Canada is fortunate to receive all the latest news through our partners who are on the lookout for new technologies in security. Recently, we learned about a medical alert button that brings together all the elements sought after in a fall detection device.

The Numera LIBRIS (manufactured by Nortek) is a fall bracelet/pendant that combines these qualities:

The most advanced detection available: multiple accelerometers, a gyroscope, and a magnetometer can distinguish normal movements from a real fall to avoid unnecessary distress calls.

Activity classification system: As soon as an abnormal movement is detected, the data is checked again by a sophisticated classifier to validate the signal.

Lightweight and comfortable: the device is ideal for elderly people, pregnant women, etc.

Data collection: If you wish, the LIBRIS can record your pulse and blood pressure and send it to your caregivers for continuous monitoring.

An easy way to find you: If you fall, a geolocation system will help emergency services find you as quickly as possible to help you.

Manage notifications: decide who among your family and friends will have access to what data about you

You can learn more about Nortek’s Numera Libris by requesting for free quotes using our short online form

Nortek's Libris bracelet and the Everthere program: Unmatched protection!

Wearing an emergency bracelet is a good precaution against fall-related incidents. However, there is a complement to this bracelet that you can’t do without- the Everthere program! What is the Everthere program?

It is an application that allows you to store information about your health and to share this information with the people you choose. It is, therefore, possible to coordinate the Numera Libris bracelet with the Everthere program so that you can know at all times the battery level of your bracelet, the strength of the signal, as well as the volume of the alerts.

Everthere also allows you to customize the information your loved ones will have access to, either by increasing or restricting the information disclosed. This program also allows you to know and share, via the application, your blood pressure, your weight, as well as your oxygenation rate.

In short, the program can be tailored to your needs and desires in terms of monitoring your health status. This allows your caregivers to quickly know your condition and track your health.

What’s more, both Everthere and Libris can geo-locate the user and record recent locations. By combining the Libris bracelet with the Everthere program, you increase measures for your personal safety and protection.

Fall detector with two-way communication: An essential addition!

What is a two-way communication option? It is an option added to the bracelet that allows you to communicate directly with the central station in the event of a fall, and more importantly, allows the central station personnel to respond to you. That’s why it’s called “two-way”!

Think about it. In the event of a fall, you will be able to speak with professionals qualified to respond to emergency situations. They can give you instructions and let you know when help is on the way. This feature is NOT a luxury but a necessity!

How does the fall detector bracelet work?

Here is how it works! A fall detector belongs to the large category of panic buttons. It is an accessory available in the form of a bracelet or pendant, inside which an accelerometer is installed.

This same accelerometer detects sudden, abrupt movements (such as a fall) and alerts the control unit automatically in such situations. Moreover, if you have an active lifestyle, it is recommended to choose a fall detector pendant (instead of a bracelet) to reduce the possibility of false alarms triggered by normal movements.

Do you find the idea of a fall detector interesting? It is a good choice because this device is designed to maximize your safety and increase your self-confidence.

Medical Alert Systems is THE reference for finding the fall detector that meets YOUR needs. There is an option for everyone!

What happens in case of a fall? Who will help you?

The thought of a fall can be worrisome and cause anxiety. You will want to know the emergency procedure BEFORE such a situation occurs so that you know what to expect.

When you wear a fall sensor bracelet and fall, this is what happens!

1) The accelerometer detects a sudden movement;

2) An automatic signal is sent to the central unit;

3) The central receives the signal and tries to reach you;

4) If there is a problem or no response, the control panel sends help;

5) Help arrives and provides the assistance required.

The response time with a fall detector bracelet or pendant is very fast! Within seconds, the central station has initiated the emergency response procedure, and help will come to you within minutes if needed.

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of a fall detector bracelet to ensure your safety and well-being!

Can you add other features to your panic button?

Absolutely! Panic buttons, in general, are customizable devices. A traditional panic button only has 2 manually activated buttons but there are a variety of accessories and options you can add.

Here are the main accessories that can be added to your Panic Button!

  1. Of course, there is the fall detector!
    A panic button with an accelerometer (or fall detector) is a device that every senior with balance problems or loss of independence should buy. It is the ultimate in protection!
  2. GPS option can be added to the fall detector
    Fall detector bracelets can actually have a built-in GPS chip. This is particularly useful for people with Alzheimer’s disease, since they are prone to wandering.
  3. Medication reminders can also be worthwhile.
    With aging comes a lot of medications to take for many people. Forgetfulness happens, but when it happens too frequently, it can be harmful to your health. The bracelet with integrated medication reminder feature allows you to avoid such an inconvenience!

Tips for maximizing the effectiveness of a fall detector bracelet!

Maximum benefits from fall detector bracelet.

Buying a fall detector bracelet is already half the battle. But not so fast! This panic button does not guarantee absolute safety if you misuse it. So it’s in your best interest to follow the advice provided by PanicButton.ca and other professionals in the field!

First of all, wear your fall detector at all times!

A fall always happens at the least expected moment. If you wish to remove the bracelet from time to time, you reduce its effectiveness and your protection considerably. Experts recommend that the bracelet be worn at all times, even if you are sitting on a couch at home.

Fall detectors are 100% waterproof so wear them in the shower, bath, and pool! In fact, these are the places where you should wear the fall detector bracelet the most. Wet floors are a common cause of falls and injuries.

The most important tip to remember is to wear the Fall Detector bracelet at all times. It’s the only way to get the most out of it and maximize your safety.

Is a fall detector bracelet for you?

Do you have to wait until you’ve experienced a fall to get the tools to prevent such an incident? Absolutely not! A single fall can have serious physical and moral consequences and it is wrong to think that only people who have already fallen repeatedly can benefit from it.

In reality, the fall detector bracelet is essential as soon as you have health concerns, including:

  • Heart disease
  • Loss of balance due to age or physical condition
  • Dizziness due to medication
  • Diabetes (Type 1 or 2)
  • Arthritis, osteoarthritis, or osteoporosis
  • Low Blood Pressure

Top 5 Safety Devices in 2024: Medical Emergency Bracelets and Panic Buttons

HOW TO CHOOSE A MEDICAL ALERT SYSTEM

If you’re thinking about getting a medical emergency bracelet or panic button, which is the best choice for you?

These wearable security products have a variety of features and can fulfill different needs. They have different prices, too. Thus, it can be difficult to choose the one that may be best for you.

Don’t forget that a medical emergency bracelet or panic button can get you the help you need in the event of an emergency.

Is It Recommended To Use An App On Your Cell Phone?

Are you thinking your current cell phone is sufficient for your safety or security? That’s a big risk, according to the experts.

The chances of you having your cell phone with you at all times are slim.

How often do you get out of your chair and move around, leaving your cell phone behind?

If you don’t carry your emergency medical alert system with you at all times, you are putting yourself at risk.

If you are considering using a digital voice assistant like Google Home or even Alexa by the giant Amazon, know that this technology may not be able to provide you with all the services you need.

Alexa, like Google Home, is programmed to dial a mobile or landline phone, but to date, neither of the two rivals can reach the 9-1-1 emergency service. A medical emergency bracelet or panic button can.

Emergency medical alert systems are reassuring

It’s a big relief to know that all you have to do is press the call button on your emergency medical alert bracelet or portable panic button and a dispatcher will be on the line to contact emergency services, a family member, or a friend on your contact list.

Whether you are a senior, you live alone, or in poor health or have impaired mobility, an emergency medical alert system will be very helpful for you.

Many security companies offer this type of product or service. In a quick review of the top 10 companies in our blog, we’ve put together a list of the options available.

Experience with customer service*.The wait was short and the representative had the information readily available. However, her French was sketchy and some words pronounced in English confused me.

The agent did a good job of informing me of the options available.

Very good experience and the prices are the cheapest on the market in 2022 for a panic button.

I immediately reached a representative on the phone who was very knowledgeable about the products and services.

He explained all the technical differences between the choices satisfactorily.

As I waited for the customer service agent to call me back, I wondered if my message had fallen into the void.

20 minutes later, a helpful agent contacted me by phone.

I spoke with an agent located in the United States who spoke only English.

If you choose this company, you must be bilingual or English speaking.

Their monitoring stations are located south of the border.

6 Questions you ask yourself most about panic buttons

Do you have questions about medical emergency bracelets or panic buttons? Read on to find the answers to the six (6) most frequently asked questions.

1-Are you entitled to a tax credit when you buy a panic button?

You only need to meet the following two (2) conditions to benefit from the “Tax credit for expenses incurred by a senior to maintain his or her autonomy” refund:

  1. Be a resident of Quebec since December 31, 2018
  2. Be at least 70 years old on December 31, 2018

The refund of this tax credit is equal to 20% of the total cost incurred for the purchase, lease, and installation of the system considered eligible. Please note: only costs over $250 are eligible.

In case of acquisition of a portable emergency medical alert system, these amounts must have been used to purchase or lease (including installation), one of the following devices:

  • Remote monitoring of the individual in the event of an emergency
  • an emergency panic button
  • measurement of medical parameters
  • the taking of medication
  • location of the person concerned using GPS

To inquire about a refund, please contact Revenu Québec.

You can contact one of our partners by filling out the short online request form on this page, free of charge. By sending one request to Medical Alert Systems Canada, you will receive in less than 48 hours up to three (3) offers without any obligation.

2-What are some positive data for the personal alarm systems industry?

According to data available to security companies offering emergency medical bracelets or panic buttons, this niche market is expected to reach a size of $11.1 billion by 2025.

The reasons for the explosive growth of the portable emergency medical alert system market are the increasing number of people with Alzheimer’s disease and the longer expected life expectancy of Canadians, among others.

As proof, the World Bank Group indicates on their website that in Canada, 7.68% of the population reached the age of 65 in 1960, compared to 16.98% in 2017. Tied with Norway and Israel, Canada is the 13th country in the world (out of 137) with the longest life expectancy (the United States is 37th).

The global market for portable emergency medical alert systems is expected to grow by 5.8% over the next 6 years. The overall development rate is considered high by the various players in this market and is motivating them to infuse significant investments into the research and development sector.

3- Should you choose your panic button/emergency bracelet based on price alone?

Yes and no. Choose a portable medical alert system that you can rely on to get you the help you need in an emergency.

Most emergency medical bracelets and panic buttons will do the job they are designed to do. The service you choose is the main factor in determining your satisfaction.

If your budget can’t afford to pay for cellular data options (which allow you to go outside the home with your device), then choose the next best system you like.

4- How does the fall detection system in an emergency bracelet work?

Choose a medical alert system with care to make sure you receive help when needed. A fall detector is not a portable medical alert system in itself.

Rather, you are purchasing a medical emergency bracelet or panic button with a fall detection device in the form of a sensor or a turn-on feature on your cell phone.

Select the best portable medical alert system for you depending on the prospect of supplementing it with a fall detector.

5- What is a panic button really for?

If your parents are aging and you’re constantly worried about their safety and health, a medical emergency bracelet or panic button will give you peace of mind. You will know, in fact, that in the event of an incident or a call, the control center will send you a notification directly by email or SMS on the platform of your choice.

A wearable emergency medical alert system will allow you to monitor your parent or aging relative to ensure their well-being and be notified immediately if they require assistance.

In the event of a health problem such as nausea or dizziness, for example, all they have to do is press the emergency button on their bracelet or pendant to activate the alarm to notify the central monitoring station immediately.

If your parents are showing the first signs of Alzheimer’s disease, a medical alert system will be a big help. If they frequently miss taking their medication, an emergency bracelet or panic button can also act as a medication reminder.

6- Why choose a device with central monitoring services in 2024?

Consider the consequences if you fall and are unable to press the button on your portable emergency medical alert system due to pain or injury. Suppose you can press the alarm but cannot speak.

When the fall detection system senses a sudden impact or if you press the button on your emergency pendant or bracelet:

  • The device used to transmit and receive the communication is switched on
  • The alarm signal is sent to the remote monitoring center
  • The representative responsible for monitoring alerts and giving assistance will speak to you directly
  • If you can talk, you can describe the situation to him; he will immediately notify the emergency service required (ambulance, police, firefighters, etc.)
  • If you are unable to speak, the representative will send the appropriate emergency service immediately.

Emergency services dispatch whenever it is needed.
